About Counselling

Talking therapies, including counselling and psychotherapy, have been proven to help people through a range of issues, whether they relate to current difficulties or traumatic events from your past. Talking to someone who won't judge you or tell you what you should do can help you find your own way forward. The counsellor accompanies you on your journey, providing a safe and confidential space for you to explore anything that may be causing you distress.

Along with general counselling skills, an integrative psychotherapist like me will also have specific techniques they can use based on your own individual needs and goals.

Although traditionally counselling has been accessed face to face, I have also been offering telephone and online appointments ever since starting my private practice. This may feel different to sharing the same room with your therapist, but these methods can still be an effective way of working. They offer clients greater convenience, and may cause less anxiety for some people.

If you would like to find out more about counselling and psychotherapy in general, the BACP website is a good place to start. Or you can contact me for a free initial consultation.

About Me

I am a counsellor and psychotherapist working with adults in the Garstang area and online.  I have experience gained in a general counselling service, private practice, and in working with people in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction - more than 1500 client hours in total. I offer appointments both during the day and in the evenings.

I am also a qualified supervisor for other counsellors/psychotherapists.

Having had a successful career in academia, I retrained as a psychotherapist after realising that the most rewarding part of my job was always the personal interactions I had with colleagues and students. My background in research and education means that I am passionate about taking every opportunity to learn more about techniques or advances that are of benefit to my clients. I also work as a specialist mentor with students who have mental health issues or autism, alongside my counselling work.

Qualifications

I have a Masters degree (with distinction) in Integrative Psychotherapy.

I also engage in regular professional development, which includes short courses, web-based learning, and continuous reading of relevant books and articles.

Areas Covered

I offer counselling and psychotherapy for a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, stress, bereavement, trauma, addiction, life transitions and relationship issues.

I have experience in working with people on the autism spectrum, and have undertaken relevant training (e.g. National Autistic Society courses). I have also worked with people with other kinds of neurodiversity (e.g. dyslexia; ADHD).

Approach

I believe in tailoring my approach to the needs and experiences of the individual client, and my training in Integrative Psychotherapy helps me to do this.

Professional Standards

I am an Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, and I abide by their ethical and professional standards.  Being accredited means that I have passed through a thorough evaluation by the BACP to demonstrate that I am a competent, ethical and independent practitioner.

Fees

My standard rate is £45 per session. Sessions last 50-60 minutes. I am happy to offer telephone and video counselling (£40) as well as face to face.

Free First Consultation

I offer a free, 30-minute initial consultation by phone, online or in person.

Accessibility

My normal counselling room is upstairs, but there is an alternative downstairs for anyone with mobility issues.  Wheelchair access may be possible but please let me know beforehand if this is required.

I am happy to make any sensory adjustments necessary for neurodivergent clients.

Supervision (For Counsellors)

I offer supervision at a cost of £40 per hour.  Please contact me if you would like a discussion to see whether I might be the right supervisor for you.

I hold a Certificate in Supervision from the Manchester Institute for Psychotherapy.
